You may be a lover of Paris, but if you’re expecting an extravagant visage of the Eiffel Tower and cute little streets then Baryshnikov’s latest play, In Paris will strike a different chord. The eighty minute play starring Mikhail Baryshnikov is really about the tumultuous times of lonely refugees routed to different European Countries during the Civil War.

Most of the audience slowly scatters into the theater, taking their seat, oblivious to the fact that Baryshnikov has been sitting there all along; perusing the spectators he’s about to perform for. One might question what’s on his mind, the purpose, or if anyone even considers the countless possibilities for taking on this postmodern approach to an audience that barely notices.

Nevertheless,the star of the play sits, silently watching his audiences get settled in, ready for a spectacular. Will they get the little nuances of the play, the histories, and slight innuendoes? Or will it pass over them as quickly as the English translation escapes the dark wall!

First Russian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, Ivan Bunin’s 1940 short story transcends on stage in an experimental play about a tragic love story involving a writer and waitress who are brought together by their solitary loneliness. The play is attributed by the poetic intermingling of Russian and French and is brought to stage with the grace of Baryshnikov’s original reputation as a world famous ballet dancer. Although you won’t see him twirling throughout, he doesn’t let his viewers leave the theater without impressing upon them a classical foundation which the name Baryshnikov prides itself on.

In Paris will run through April 21 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, although at this point getting tickets may be quite the challenge!

It’s no surprise that the collection featured lots of darker shades for fall/winter, but the floral ensembles were definitely a refreshing touch.

Suzanne Collin’s, Hunger Games depicts a dystopian Universe on the big screen. But let’s explore the literary facet of the novel first. Costume designer, Judianna Makovsky worked to ” try to stay as close to the descriptions in the book as I [she] could,” bringing me to wonder how this fantasy fiction reveled in the minds of the audience that read the book first. Beyond Jennifer Lawrence’s stunning performance, was the Hunger Games Dystopian setting as imagined when watching it on the big screen? Was it too much or not enough?

Imagine you had to pick a district. You are in the world of the Hunger Games! Is your fashion sensory pulling you towards the Glam Capitol or closer to Katniss Everdeen’s utilitarian style? After All District 12 may seem drab, but the styling inspiration behind Hunger Games District Couture is actually quite close to home.

Although Hunger Games dystopian society may be viewed as an unlikely candidate for a fashion film, it is actually aesthetically eclectic and structured to each District’s institution. Likewise fashion today is so extensive that amidst the high expectations there is an excitement about individuality, outlandish style and a dress to impress attitude exemplified by the film’s stylist played by Lenny Kravitz.

The outrageously colorful ensembles of Effie Trinket and Capitol fashion were styled by some of the most coveted fashion collections: Rodarte, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, among others.

Hunger Games outfits were researched by studying the garb of 19th century working class citizens. From Harry Potter to Hunger Games, costume designer Judianna Makovsky lights up the screen and embarks the audience on an adventure of district couture!

The Oscar nominations are in and the buzz around town is that…. Well not so fast! We were inaugurated into award season with the Golden Globes and are now trotting to the Oscars with “The Artist” nabbing quite a bit of the spotlight. The film was exceptional, with a great cast, and a directorial vision that captures a silent experience.

Leaving the cast speechless and the audience impressed, Berenice Bejo, “The Artist” was obviously nominated for best supporting Actress. If you haven’t seen it yet, then embark on an adventure to 1927 where Hollywood filmmaking began to change.

It’d been quite a while since I’d last picked up the Bronte’s Penguin Classic off my book self, but I was eager to discuss the heroin character whose manuscript still survives in the British Museum. A quick no surprise disclaimer as this happens every now and again; because instead of networking at after work mixers or happy hours, Literature graduate students tend to commence apropos to the novel.

Bringing me to the next manifestation of text as film.

Authorship is like a spinning wheel that occasionally gets granted a film. So while we’re still on this revolving tangent, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is definitely worth seeing. I remember discussing Jonathan Safran Foer’s writing style, a modern author that took the leap into postmodern text. His use of colors, images, and word placement on the page connoted a readership that not only participated in Oskar Schell’s healing journey but began to actively search for the sixth borough with him.

Although The Film is essentially melancholy it is extremely touching and definitely a must see. It is the story of a young boy’s determination, faith in humanity and compassion. As Oskar runs through the city to unlock one last mystery linked to his dad (who died in the world trade center), he finds solace and courage among the eclectic individuals who rarely fail to offer him a sympathetic hand.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is heart-wrenching, imaginative, and moving. A definitive reflection of how niceties shouldn’t be taken for granted: simple or complex.

By pointing out the outdated and lackluster pride with which Andy paradoxically values her diminutive idea of what fashion is, she instead begins to criticize and categorizes her as the lowest tiered participant that seems to be hindered by her factual capitation.

This inturn leads to a lack of individuality, as she becomes hindered and unable to flourish. However when she comes to the realization that a whole industry is underway, things change as does she.

However if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of LA’s sparkling sunshine waves, rest assured your beach body is finely tuned to the beat of holiday. Continue indulging in white, eat ice-cream and wear your board shorts because summer will pass and although fall will make itself noticeably endearing with new added adventures, it will also Tame our Tans!
